School District Announces Restart Strategy

Today, the Abbotsford School District released its 2020-2021 Restart Strategy to guide school return this September.

Referred to as "Toti:ltcha", to honour the language of the Stó:lō people, the Abbotsford School District has developed its strategy as mandated by the Ministry of Education. The strategy follows the guidelines established by the provincial government. Families are encouraged to read the plan in full to learn more many of the health, safety, teaching and learning strategies being implemented.

"Over the last few months, our school district has been working to develop our most creative approaches to providing a quality education for our students in Abbotsford," said Dr. Stan Petersen, Chair for the Abbotsford Board of Education. "As a Board, we're thankful for all the efforts that have been put in place and are proud of the framework we've established, where the health and safety for our staff and students is a top priority."

Within the plan, families will learn about the various options available to them, including the following:

In‐class Instruction

Students will be face-to-face maximizing in‐class instruction. Having students in the classroom is the best way to minimize learning gaps and provide the academic, social and emotional supports essential for learning.

Homeschooling

Homeschooling is an alternative method of teaching offered outside the B.C. educational system. Typically, a family member is responsible for delivering the entire educational program to children at home.

Distributed Learning

Distributed learning is available for students in grades 8‐12 who can complete individual courses online under a District teacher's direction.

Transition Program (Under Consideration)

The district is exploring a temporary transition option for families who are not yet ready to have their children return to in‐person instruction. This option is not confirmed and is under consideration pending local interest. This option will allow students to learn remotely and to receive some learning support from the district.

More details on Family Options: Restart Strategy, Pg. 17

"As you can imagine, implementing these options is a monumental undertaking at every level of our organization," notes Dr. Kevin Godden, Superintendent of Schools. "Parents will be required to make a decision for their preferred learning method for the 2020‐2021 school year by August 31."

By September 4th, all schools will share more school-specific information on their websites to help families and students learn more about what to expect in September, such as where to enter and exit their school, traffic flow and more details.
